Having constantly falied to lose weight through diet and turned down for a gastric bypass due to his enormous weight, Paul Mason, dubbed 'Britain's Fattest Man,' was overjoyed when a reputable bariatric surgeon agreed to perform the operation.

Shaw Somers, one of the UK’s leading obesity surgeons (with over 2,000 gastric bypass operations under his skinny belt) took on the controversial challenge which carried a 50/50 risk of life and death. Defending his decision to operate, Somers told the BBC there was “no other choice,” because without surgery, Paul Mason's life was in serious danger from obesity and weight-related health problems.

Channel 4's recent documentary, 'Britain's Fattest Man,' followed the months leading up to the operation revealing the despair and torment of Ipswich-born Paul, a man who admits he was locked into an obsessive relationship with food.
